This isn't your typical textbook science. Campers
will get to see the different sides of the subject
using hands-on approach through experiments and
physical exploration.
This camp guarantees to be a week of fun while seeing
the world around you in a different way. Each of
the five days will be dedicated to a different field
of science: Physics, Astronomy, Natural Science,
Zoology and Chemistry.
Campers will learn how Physics can simplify our
lives through an examination of pulleys, levers,
ramps and other simple tools and concepts, as well
as the many forms of energy with campers building
their very own operational solar powered car to
demonstrate the power of the sun.
Our day of Astronomy will include discussion of
galaxies, nebula, comets, asteroids, eclipses as
well as an in-depth look into our solar system.
The day will conclude with each camper building
a scale model of the solar system.
Plan on getting your hands dirty when we examine
the amazing world of Natural Science by focusing
on the biotype located on the Cedar Crest campus.
Campers will gather water samples from the wetlands
on campus and use microscopes to examine the variety
of microorganisms found in their sample. A walking
tour of the Cedar Crest campus will facilitate a
discussion on the environment through the observation
of the campus' intricate bionetwork and the different
components that sustain it.
No science camp would be complete without the examination
of Zoology. Campers will learn about many different
types of animals including mammals, reptiles and
marine animals, as well as their habitats and diet.
Part of the day will be spent in the field looking
for birds and small mammals that are indigenous
to the Michigan landscape. Adaptation, migration,
and survival machanisms like camouflage will all
be topics of discussion. Campers will get up close
and personal with a living coral reef. This examination
will include creatures of the deep such as starfish,
hermit crabs, snails, live sponge, sea cumcumbers,
anemones and of course living coral. This is the
budding marine biologists dream!
Lastly, campers will don goggles for a day of Chemistry.
Don't worry mom and dad, we will work with kid friendly
materials. The day will be spent doing experiments
and learning about chemical reactions. Campers will
be surprised by the every day chemical reactions
that take place around them that they don't even
realize are happening. The day will culminate with
campers erupting their handmade volcano.
Camp is open to boys and girls ages 7-12
